Palm Treo 700p

Display and Multimedia

Once again, little has changed from the excellent Treo 650 here. The Treo 700p has a sharp 320 x 320 pixel display capable of displaying 65,000 colors. It's easy to read, has very good color for image and video playback and beats QVGA Windows Mobile Pocket PC phones by a small margin in the resolution department. It beats the 240 x 240 Treo 700w by a wider margin and you really can see more on screen, which is most noticeable when web browsing, reading eBooks and working with MS Office documents.
Pocket Tunes 3.0 is included for your MP3 playback pleasure and this is an excellent application which is skinnable and supports playlists, repeat, shuffle, playing with the screen turned off to reduce power consumption and background playback (the music won't stop when you switch to another application even though the Treo doesn't support multi-tasking). If you register Pocket Tunes you'll be able to download some bonus skins and you can upgrade to the Deluxe version if you wish to play WMA, OGG, WAV or Internet radio stations. The Treo supports stereo output through its 2.5mm jack and the Sprint version comes with stereo headset while the Verizon version comes with a mono earbud headset with mic. You can get an adapter if you wish to use standard 3.5mm stereo headphones.
The Treo comes with a large selection of ring tones, and ring volume is excellent. You can record your own ring tones using the Treo's Voice Recorder application which is a very simple process. It supports WAV and MIDI ringtones but not MP3s out of the box. You can send voice notes using the Messaging app which can be sent via MMS and record voice notes for your own personal use. Voice recordings are saved to internal memory and you can quickly scan forward and back during playback using the d-pad. Call volume through the built-in earpiece is louder than the somewhat subdued Treo 650 and is adequate for all but very noisy locations (the same can be said of most current smartphones, they don't have hugely loud earpieces).

Camera

The Treo 700p shares the same camera used in the Treo 700w, which increases resolution to 1.3 megapixels, offering sharper and larger images. However, it lacks the color saturation and accuracy of the Treo 650. That said, your favorite image editor can help things along once the shot is taken. You can crank color and change color balance, but you can't add pixels where non exist (without making a noisy image), so we'll take higher resolution over color fidelity. Still, we wish the colors were as nice as the Treo 650's. Images taken at full 1280 x 1024 resolution look nice and sharp when resized down to sub-VGA size. The sample photos below were taken at 1280 x 1024 resolution and are unedited other than resizing down to 300 x 240.

Software

The Treo runs Palm OS 5.4.9 (aka Garnet) and comes with Palm Desktop for Windows and Mac with support for syncing to Outlook on Windows. You'll get Documents To Go 8 for viewing and editing Word and Excel docs and viewing PowerPoint files and PDFs. This is an excellent office application suite that's installed in ROM (it won't take up additonal storage space, and you need not install it). Docs To Go beats Microsoft's own mobile office suite found on Windows Mobile Pocket PC phones when it comes to preserving document formatting and support for advanced editing features. Blazer 4.5 web browser, VersaMail 3.5, Messaging for MMS and SMS, ScanR, Pocket Tunes, Palm's own Pictures and Videos, World Clock, and Handmark Express. The Verizon version includes Verizon's Wireless Sync software and the Sprint version includes SprintTV (MobiTV), Good and Sprint's Business Connection.

Battery Life

Battery life and capacity is equal to the Treo 650, which is to say very good by smartphone standards. The Treo ships with a beefy 1,800 mAh Lithium Ion battery that's user replaceable. Simply slide off the back cover to swap in a new battery. We found we could go 2 to 3 days on a charge with moderate web browser use (45 minutes/day) and checking email 5 times/day. For the test we talked on the phone for 30 minutes per day and used the PDA functions, edited MS Office documents and played MP3s for 30 minutes per day. If you've got the Treo checking email every 15 minutes throughout the business day, plan on watching lots of videos or Sprint TV (MobiTV), plan on charging more frequently. As with the Treo 650, leaving Bluetooth on will reduce runtimes, though not dramatically.
Palm's keyguard application prevents accidental button presses from initiating calls or running applications by accident. This means you won't open your purse or briefcase and find a drained Treo. Should the Treo's battery run out, the contents of memory will remain intact since the device uses non-volatile memory which doesn't require power to preserve the contents of memory.

Kodak's EasyShare V610 Camera

Trading digital electronics for mechanical parts has given camera makers an opportunity to tinker with the design of their wares in inventive ways, none more so than Kodak.
The Rochester, N.Y.-based company that brought film photography to the masses -- by making cameras easy to use and film easy to load -- is continuing its friendly photography tradition into the digital era with its line of EasyShare digicams.
One of Kodak's recent EasyShare offerings, the V610 (US$384-$458), is also one of its more innovative: a dual-lens camera with a monster optical zoom and a footprint that can slip into a pocket or purse.
The slim black byteshooter has very totable dimensions. It measures 4.4-by-2.2-by-0.9 inches and weighs a scant 5.6 ounces.
High Concept Lens With the V610, Kodak takes the dual-lens concept introduced in its ultra-wide angle V570 model to new heights.
The unit has two Schneider-Kreuznach C-Variogon glass lenses. One acts as a medium range zoom -- the 35 millimeter equivalent of a 38-114 mm lens -- and the other as a long zoom -- the 35 mm equivalent of a 130-380 mm lens.
In addition to its optical zoom, the camera has a 4x digital zoom.
Variable Photo Quality
I found the photo quality from the camera variable. Flash photos had discernible noise, as did images captured outside in low light. Shots in sunlight had almost no noise or artifacts.
Color fidelity in photos was very good.
A number of image resolutions are supported by the device, from "best" at six megapixels to "e-mail" at 1.1 MP.
Photos are stored in jpeg format. You can fit about 14 high-resolution images in the camera's 28 megabytes of internal memory. You can expand its storage, though, with optional SD/MMC cards.
Steady Stabilization
Large zoom lenses not only magnify objects, they magnify motion, too. The slightest shake will be amplified and blur your picture. To counter that, Kodak has incorporated an anti-blur system into the V610.
It works remarkably well.
A separate subsystem is built into the camera for stabilizing video captured with the unit.
Unlike some digital still cameras, the V610's optical zoom can be used with its video functions.
Exceptional Video
The V610 -- as does its cousin, the V570 -- takes some of the best video I've seen from a digital still camera.
Framing video, as well as stills, is a pleasure with the unit's big, bright 2.8-inch LCD.
Video is compressed in MPEG-4 and is captured at 30 frames per second. It's stored in QuickTime format, which translates very well from the computer monitor to the television screen.
With a 1 gigabyte SD card, shooting at the highest quality resolution, you can shoot just over 30 minutes of continuous video.
Nice Integration
Video and stills are nicely integrated in the camera. For example, you can create thumbnails and snapshots from video frames.
The thumbnails can be made into storyboards containing four, nine or 16 frames from a video.
You can also trim video clips in the camera. That's handy for saving space when you're in the field.
Another feature I found useful was the unit's built-in panorama stitching. It will automatically combine three photos into a panorama shot for you without the assistance of a computer.
Bluetooth Connection
The latest rage among digital cameras is WiFi technology. Admittedly, I haven't had much success with WiFi cameras. They and my network just don't seem to speak the same language.
The V610 doesn't support WiFi, but it does support Bluetooth . Bluetooth allows the camera to communicate with other devices that deploy the technology -- devices such as PDAs , cell phones, printers, kiosks and computers.
After my tribulations with WiFi cameras, I was amazed at the ease of Bluetooth. I turned on my Palm (Nasdaq: PALM) Tungsten PDA and the V610. Pressed the "share" button on the Kodak. Chose Bluetooth from a menu. Bam! A photo went from camera to PDA in nothing flat.
Kodak's V610 sports an impressive bundle of features packaged in a way that makes them easy to use. It's a great camera for shutterbugs looking for an eminently portable unit that takes good pictures and fine video.

Logitech Cordless Desktop MX5000 Laser

Here's something new: Logitech has paired its fanciest flagship mouse with a keyboard designed to reduce your use of the mouse. Along the way, it's taken the concept of two-way communication between PC and input device, first seen in last October's light-up e-mail- and instant-message-notifier MX610 mouse, to new heights.
Logitech's Cordless Desktop MX5000 Laser ($150) bundles a Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse with a thumb-sized transceiver that plugs into a USB port. The latter gadget turns the keyboard into a Bluetooth 2.0 hub for swapping data with compatible devices, whether downloading music files to or uploading camera-phone photos from your cell phone or listening to music or having VoIP conversations with a Bluetooth headset.

Even slicker is the Sync button on the keyboard that synchronizes contacts, calendar, and notes information between your phone and your PC's Microsoft Outlook (or Lotus Notes or Organizer).
The catch, unfortunately, is that only some Nokia phones and Nokia's PC Suite Windows software are fully supported for both sync and data transfer -- the feature worked nicely with our Nokia 6230, but owners of other phones and PDAs must check one of Logitech's support pages to see the fine print of device compatibility.

When not talking to other devices, the MX5000 keyboard is listening to your PC and passing on the information to you via a 102 by 42-pixel LCD screen in the top center of the keyboard. Usually the LCD displays the date, time, and temperature -- although when the PC first boots it greets you by Windows user name, e.g., "Hi Bob, GOOD MORNING." It can also notify you of incoming e-mail or instant messages.

Four buttons below the LCD summon and navigate through a brief menu for choosing among your digital-music playlists or listening to Internet radio (only via the bundled MusicMatch Jukebox software); the screen also lists track, artist (if available), and duration when you're playing a song. Another choice shows the functions assigned to the F9 through F12 keys.
The latter can be customized to launch a program, document, or folder by navigating to it and holding down one of the four function keys, as you would to preset a station for your car radio. As with other Logitech and Microsoft keyboards, an F Lock key lets you choose between applications' usual functions for F1 through F12 or Logitech's alternative set, including undo, print, and save keys and launch keys for Microsoft Word and Excel.

Sony NW-1000

Shorter , fatter and rounder than the LG player, but just as black and glossy, the NW-1000 fits comfortably in your hand and the controls fall very naturally under your fingers or thumb. Again it's the size of a small mobile phone (clamshell rather than candy bar). There's a lanyard hole on the back, but the player is a little heavy to hang around your neck, so it's more useful for a wrist strap (not included).

The OLED screen is set into the case and takes up half the front of the player, giving you plenty of room for track information and menus. The screen is clear to read, even at quite a sharp angle. Despite the size, it's only a mono screen and the NW-1000 is just a music player; it doesn't display video, photos, text, album art or anything else. You can't record so there's no microphone or line-in socket. You can switch the audio output from headphones to line out so you could plug it straight into your hi-fi, although you don't get an audio cable with the player.
The Play/Pause button is surrounded by a four-way thumb wheel so you can scroll through music and menus and select what you want, all with your thumb. Press the Option button for the most useful commands or to jump to the full menu on the home screen and use the thumb wheel and back button to pick and choose. The immediate options here are mostly the ones you'd want like changing the shuffle and repeat options, rating the current track, jumping to the current artist, album or genre in the library or displaying the clock or calendar. You can also shut the player down, instead of pausing it and waiting for it to go to sleep.

With 8 GB of music - especially if you're using the compact ATRAC format - you'll have enough tracks to want more control. As well as the usual shuffle and repeat modes, this player has a lot of other ways to get the music you want. As well as browsing through the music library (with a category for music you've transferred recently) or choosing a playlist, you can search for a particular artist, album or song by initials. You can add tracks from the library to one of the five built in 'bookmark' playlists by pressing the Play/Pause button. And just as importantly, you can take individual songs off the list as well, if you change your mind.

LG MFJM53

The name won't grab you, but when you see LG's 8GB player you might want to grab it. It is stylish enough that it won a design award and it's very comfortable in the hand; about the size and shape of a slim mobile phone. It has a curve at the top for the scroll wheel, which has forward and back buttons on either side.

The MFJM53 copes with a wide range of content—pictures, video and even text files, so you could use it for ebooks, photos and TV recordings. The screen is clear and bright. Videos look surprisingly good, but it doesn't cope well with very detailed photos. Get Windows Media Player to downsample images automatically and they'll look better and take up less space.

With 8 GB of content, navigation is important. The MFJM53 actually has two parallel sets of controls, which can be confusing until you get the hang of it. As with many devices, the Play/Pause button also turns the player on. You press the Menu button on the side of the player to get the main menu, which you move through with the scroll wheel.
Pick music, videos, photos, text files, record or setup - you can press the scroll wheel or the menu button to get into the content. Instead of giving you another list to choose from, the player jumps straight to the first file and starts playing. You then use the forward and back buttons to move through music and video tracks.

NOKIA N72

Berlin, Germany and Hong Kong, China - Nokia today revealed the Nokia N72, a sleek and stylish new addition to the Nokia Nseries range. In pearl pink or gloss black, this compact package has high-perfomance multimedia at its core, wrapped in a beautiful design. The Nokia N72 offers the benefits of versatile photography, entertainment and personal productivity to people who value style as much as high performance. A powerful yet stylish multimedia device, the Nokia N72 is equipped with a 2-megapixel camera and integrated digital music player, with dedicated capture and music player keys, an integrated browser, FM radio and support for Visual Radio.

"The Nokia N72 perfectly illustrates our commitment to offer the powerful performance of the Nokia Nseries to people based in regions dominated by EDGE/GSM network coverage," said Pekka Pohjakallio, vice president, Multimedia Computers, Nokia. "The Nokia N72 allows you to tailor your multimedia device to match your interests, whether music, imaging or entertainment content, all in a stylish design you will be proud to own."

"The Nokia Nseries promise of high performance technology is at the core of the Nokia N72 design DNA; with this device people will feel like they can express their extrovert nature," said Bill Sermon, vice president of Multimedia Design, Nokia. "The design concept was inspired by what the Nokia N72 means to someone, rather than what it can merely do for that person. We drew on the relationship people have with things that inspire great performances, like the world's finest grand piano or the perfect handcrafted writing pen. We wanted to play with contrast and detail to create drama within the product - and the end result is a beautiful device that creates its own signature at the same time that it draws you in."

The pearl pink and gloss black versions of the Nokia N72 have digital textures on the back, which personalize the device. "The overall design makes a strong statement for the Nokia N72 as a multimedia computer, but the digital textures, or graphics, on the back add a subtlety of personal ownership, that it is my device," Sermon adds.

Walk, Talk and Rock
Personalize your Nokia N72 with a choice of digital music tracks, and enjoy music on the go with the integrated digital music player. Press the music key for direct access to your music tracks. Record music from your CDs, create playlists and transfer your music onto your Nokia N72 with the Nokia Music Manager, a part of Nokia PC Suite.

Slide and Shoot
Morph your Nokia N72 into a digital camera by sliding open the active lens cover and compose your shot using the high definition 2.1 inch colour display. The 2 megapixel (1600 x 1200 pixels) camera includes an integrated flash, which will make it easy to capture images even in low light conditions. Capture photos or video clips with just one click, and later personalize your gallery image collection with the integrated photo and video editor. Choose your favorites to print or transfer them onto a compatible PC, with the option of online sharing on Internet communities.

Matching themed headset and wrist strap are included in sales packs of the Nokia N72. The Nokia N72 is expected to be available from June 2006 in key markets worldwide, including the Middle East and Africa, Russia, Eastern Europe, mainland China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Official warning on Windows bugs

In particular it warned about one bug fixed in the latest batch of security updates that, if exploited, could put a PC under the control of an attacker.
Microsoft's recent update fixed 23 flaws found in Windows software.
Many of these bugs are known to malicious hackers and some are already actively exploited on the net.
Fast fix
Microsoft typically issues security updates for Windows and its associated programs on the second Tuesday of every month. In the August update, seven of the fixes were rated as "critical" - the highest rating.
The DHS was most concerned about the flaw identified in the MS06-040 security report. This identified a problem with the Windows server service that allows attackers to take over machines without users doing anything to help.
A worm written to exploit this bug "could enable an attacker to remotely take control of an affected system and install programs, view, change, or delete data, and create new accounts with full user rights," said the DHS in a statement. As well as overseeing efforts to combat terrorism the DHS also has a role in cybersecurity.
It said it expected the bug to be exploited within 24 hours of its existence becoming known.
Microsoft reported via its security blog that it had already seen a "limited" attack using this bug. It also said that there had been more than 100 million downloads of the MS06-040 fix since it was made available.
The server service bug is found in Windows 2000, XP and Windows Server 2003.
The vulnerabilities fixed by other patches are found in a variety of Windows programs including the Office software suite and the Internet Explorer browser.
One bug being patched is found in Microsoft's PowerPoint presentation software and an exploit code is known to be circulating online. Security experts said 11 other flaws were known to malicious hacking groups.
Users can get hold of the fixes via the Windows Update site or by using the update tool on Windows.

Net's ruling body renews US links

The US Department of Commerce has signed a five-year deal with administrative body Icann that renews the body's role overseeing net domains.
Icann oversees the growing range of generic domain names such as .com as well as country codes such as .uk.
Icann's role and its link with the US have come under scrutiny during wrangles over a porn-specific domain.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) was formed in 1998 as the net started to become a more global phenomenon. It took on many of the basic net functions formerly run by the US government.
Icann administers the net's master address books that help computers turn the names people use and understand, such as google.com, into a numerical form that computers can use.
In the last year Icann's role has become more contentious as more organisations have demanded a say in the way it makes its decisions.
Icann has rejected a proposal to create a porn-only domain, .xxx, and some suspect that politics played a role in the decision.
In July 2006, an official from the US Department of Commerce said it was still "committed" to turning Icann into a private organisation. Some suspected this might have happened on 30 September 2006 when Icann's current contract to run the net's addressing systems expired.
Any moves towards Icann becoming independent may not now take place until 2011.
However, clauses in the contract say that the agreement between the two must be renewed every year. Pressure from other organisations may mean that the ties between Icann and the US are cut before 2011.
A spokesman for Icann said discussions between Icann and the US over the net body's status were "ongoing".
November sees the first meeting of the Internet Governance Forum which grew out of international attempts to have more of a say in how the net is overseen.

Dell recall: other brands probed

This week, 4.1 million of the lithium-ion batteries, made by Sony, were recalled because of a fire risk.
Now the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is trying to find out if the same batteries in other laptops will suffer the same problem.
Sony has said it cannot name the other companies for legal reasons.
However, computer manufacturers Fujitsu and Lenovo Group Ltd have said they use Sony lithium-ion batteries in some of their products, but that their notebook computers were designed not to overheat.
Both companies said they were not recalling any batteries.
Hewlett-Packard also said they were not affected by the recall as they do not use Sony battery packs in their notebook products.

Sony has said it used the batteries in some of its Vaio notebooks.
A spokesperson for Sony said: "Some Vaio notebook series utilized the batteries in question, but at present we have not received any incident reports related to these products.
"Sony's Vaio adopts its own design for safety technology, and Sony considers there is no danger of emission of smoke or fire from these products.
"The battery charging system that Vaio uses is different from that of Dell."
She added that the fault was most likely linked to the way Dell integrated the battery into its laptop computers.
Sony lithium-ion batteries were used in Dell laptops shipped between April 2004 and July 2006, including the Latitude, Inspiron, XPS and Precision notebook models.
According to a Dell spokesperson, it affected about 15% of the batteries the company sold in that period.
The recall was issued after six confirmed instances of overheating or fire in Dell hardware; the company is offering affected consumers free replacements.
It was, said the US consumer safety watchdog, the biggest recall of electrical products in its history.
The CPSC also said they had identified 339 incidents in which lithium batteries used in laptops and cell phones - not just Dell products - overheated between 2003 and 2005.

Xbox outlines 'YouTube for games'

The software will let non-professionals develop titles and then share them via the Xbox Live online service.
The program will seek to complement a trend that has seen videogames becoming more like film blockbusters, costing up to £20m to produce.
Users will need a PC running Windows XP - or Vista in the future - to operate the tools program, called XNA Game Studio Express.
The tools will be available in trial form from 20 August and there is a $99 (£55) annual subscription.
The boom in videogame development in the UK and US in the 1980s was attributed to teenagers making games on home machines such as the Spectrum, TRS-80 and Commodore 64.
Some basic program skills were still going to be needed for the consumer version if successful titles were to be developed, he said.
Microsoft would regulate the content for appropriateness and intellectual property issues, but users would own their work, he said.
YouTube has become an enormously popular website for video clips - many of which are filmed by users themselves.
Last month YouTube reported that users watched more than 100 million videos per day.
Microsoft said more than 10 US universities, including the University of Southern California and Southern Methodist University, will include XNA Game Studio Express and Xbox 360 development in their curriculum.
User-generated content is not new; it thrives within PC gaming where gamers develop mods of popular games and add content to existing titles.
But producing games for consoles has traditionally been almost impossible because the hardware platform is closed.
Chris Lee, commercial director of FreeStyleGames, said he welcomed the opportunity the tools would give budding game developers.
But he warned that producing DIY titles was far removed from the reality of making professional games.
"I'm concerned that people will think that getting into the games industry is simply a matter of making a few home titles and then working for a professional company."
But Mr Lee agreed that there could be room in the marketplace for professional high-end games and DIY titles.

Hackers target latest Windows fix

A worm has been spotted in online that tries to use the vulnerabilities to hijack home computers.
Any computer compromised by the worm will become part of a large botnet set up to send out junk mail.
At the same time Microsoft is re-issuing a recent security patch which has made the Internet Explorer browser crash on some computers.
Spam sender
On 8 August Microsoft released a bumper collection of security patches for 23 separate flaws in Windows and programs in the Office software suite.
One of the problems identified in the August update was deemed so serious that the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a warning urging users to download the patch and apply it as soon as possible. The DHS has a role in securing America's critical infrastructure which includes the internet.
Now security companies have caught copies of a worm travelling the net that tries to infect Windows machines via this loophole.
The Mocbot worm attacks machines running Windows 2000 or XP that only have Service Pack 1 installed.
"As Microsoft only issued a patch against this vulnerability last week, many Windows computers probably remain unpatched and vulnerable to these threats," said Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos in a statement.
Computer security firms have seen two variants of this worm circulating online. Analysis by Joe Stewart at security firm Lurhq show that, once installed, it tries to download a trojan known to act as a spam proxy.
These are networks of compromised machines that junk mailers have been forced to use because so few net service firms will host companies that send out millions of unwanted messages.
Microsoft said it would be re-issuing one of the security patches because, in certain circumstances, it can cause the Internet Explorer browser to crash.
The problem occurs with the MS06-42 update which tried to fix eight separate vulnerabilities in the IE browser.
Relatively few users are thought to be suffering from the clash between IE and the security patches. Microsoft said it affected IE with Service Pack 1 installed but only if visiting websites that use data compression and the widely used version 1.1 of the HTTP web protocols.
Microsoft said it expected to have the new version of the MS06-42 update ready by 22 August. However, a "hotfix" has been made available but Microsoft said this should only be installed on those computers crashing because of the update.
